2010 was a turning point in my life when a friend of mine showed me a piece of ammolite she’d found while walking along the river bank by my home town of Bassano, Alberta. I was struck by the purity and simplicity of what I would have normally just glanced at. I held it and said aloud, “I can learn to do something with that!”
I immediately began to take courses in silversmithing and lapidary. I DID learn to make some beautiful pieces with that original raw stone and now, creating beauty from silver has become a passion for me.
Tehya is a name most commonly given to Native American baby girls, and means Precious. I have desired my entire life to create, nurture and protect that which is most
precious to me.
As is with most of us, I’ve worn and enjoyed wearing many different "Hats". I’ve been a lot of things…but mostly, I think I have been a learner.
I love my horse. I ride and compete with an AQHA reining horse named RJ. Reining is a unique form of riding, but it’s so much more. It’s the relationship I have with my horse, and the friends I have made along the way.
I love my dogs. I have shown and bred Miniature Pinscher dogs. My kennel name is Tehyadiamond Miniature Pinschers with the Canadian Kennel Club. In my eyes, my dogs are precious diamonds. I have had the opportunity to travel with my dogs to various National Shows and Specialties. I also had an Afghan Hound, Lana, who was very successful showing confirmation and lure coursing. And I’m now in the midst of training a beautiful German Shepherd whose name is Sasha. Sasha is very entertaining and incredibly smart.
I love my jewellery. I get excited, like that day on the riverbank, when I get an idea.Sometimes I can see the finished piece in my mind…sometimes I can’t. When it turns out, I’m elated and thrilled. When it doesn’t, I’m frustrated and impatient. And mostly I’m deeply content with the entire process.
I am still a learner. I still take courses to upgrade my skills and expand my vision. I do trade shows, and learn from other artists.
Tehya- Precious. What is precious to you?
